This was the most memorable and exciting meal in my heavenly, gluttonous tour of Portugal. I wasn’t sure where else I would go outside of Lisbon/Porto, but once I was able to make a reservation, I planned a whole other leg to Évora. This restaurant alone is worth planning a trip to Évora. You absolutely have to make a reservation—I saw at least 40 people get turned away at the door while I was dining, with zero walk in availability. Each course was incredibly imaginative, incredibly executed, and opened my palate and perspective to food of the Alentejo. Come extremely hungry. I was traveling alone, and although some parts would have been split for the table (like bread), the amount of food is overwhelming. Just a single menu would have been enough for four. I would almost recommend one tasting menu for two, even if it means paying for two spots. The whole bill with two glasses of wine only came to 45 euros! The first bite (a bacon wrapped sausage) with shot-sized melon puree was glorious. There was an incredible pumpkin/cheese pastry, followed by course after course of very rich, intensely-flavored food. I loved getting to try both the oxtail and the pork, but I never could have finished both! I’m not one for wasting food, but this is a place where the meal bests you—I don’t think there is a humanly way to eat everything they bring! The family behind the restaurant is so wonderful—the father/son team were the servers, and the son was thrilled to show his late grandfather on the personalized bottle of house wine. They gave a very sweet handwritten postcard of the family as a souvenir of the experience.

We would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Portugal!! Our experience here was one of the highlights of our trip. From the incredible hospitality to some of the most unique and delicious food we have ever had; it was truly a one of a kind experience. Manuel, one of the owners, welcomed us in and made us feel like we were dining in his own home. We tried so many new dishes that were all delicious and we raved about how every bite was perfect. We hope to return to this restaurant whenever we visit Portugal again and our memory of our experience here will forever be one of our favorites from our family trip.

Fantastic dinner, a hidden pearl in Evora. When we arrived in Evora during our trip we searched for something authentic, and we found this place almost hidden in the streets of the city. From the outside you wouldn't think that this is a fantastic restaurant: the only thing that gives it away is the sign out of the door and the numerous awards they display. In this family-driven place there is no menu: the chef and his son (and a couple of other people) gave us a warm welcome and explained that in their Taberna they cook like their grandparents used to. You start with some exceptional pork cold cuts, bacon-wrapped dates, a fresh mixed salad and a cheese/pumpkin pastry out of this world. Then they gave us a mysterious little sandwich (and I will not spoil the surprise for you) which was insanely good and flavorful. After all these entrees the real dinner starts: oxtail risotto, Portuguese codfish, beef neck braised for hours in red wine and homemade potato chips and pumpkin with onions. To top it all off, the desserts were astonishing: walnuts cake, cheese flan, caipirinha ice cream and a typical Portuguese dessert made with egg yolk, sugar and cinnamon. Every flavour was intense, every dish was clearly made with love and experience. The service was exceptionally good, just like the food they gave us; every dish was explained with cooking details and even some history behind the recipe. The price was insane: the dinner was absolutely underpriced for how much we ate and for the quality of the experience. If they told me this was a Michelin-starred restaurant, I would absolutely believe it. The only thing you need to remember is that you need to book a table in advance because the restaurant is very small, but if you come to Evora you MUST eat here. They accept every major credit card. Consigliatissimo.

Our dinner felt like being invited into the home of an Évora local and being treated to a special occasion feast! The food is traditional in style but prepared and presented with a nod to modern restaurant culture and fine dining. And there was so much food! A fantastic sampler of so many different dishes. The staff are so very attentive, anticipating all needs and eager to convey their own sense of happiness in working there! If you can manage to get a booking, this is a must-have experience in the Alentejo.

GREAT food: the wine, appetizers, salad, main dish, desserts (everything was tasty and unique). Always plan ahead (make a reservation). Wonderful staff and great atmosphere…. Best meal of the trip (so far). 10/10 Top notch! (PS Thank you for the restaurant suggestions in Lagos!)

We found this restaurant on the Internet and loved the concept so decided to book. (Booking is a must because it is small and extremely popular). It was a real gourmet's delight. The food was so tasty, the countless treats came thick and fast, each plate was as tasty as the next. The staff were keen to explain each dish on arrival. Sadly I have marked this down. Not because of the food but because of the rapid service. After our starters I asked for a pause but was told we needed to keep eating otherwise we would not get through it all, and that we would have time to pause before desert. We arrived at 7.30pm and the place closed at 10.00pm, so clearly we were allocated our table for the night. We felt that we were rushed and our experience would have been greatly improved with more time, instead we ended up feeling bloated and uncomfortable.

One of the greatest surprises of our trip! An original way to explore regional food in a hospitable and nice way. Food was delicious and service was very pleasant. They also take time for a small chat where Impressions can be exchanged and we got information about Portuguese traditional cuisine. Absolutely lovely!
